Bexley Sidcup Motorbike Club, Bexley
Bexley Sidup Motorbike Club has been successfully running the Achievement Award scheme since 2006.
The organisation consists of a diverse range of young people of 14 – 20 years old, some still at school, some at college and others at full time work. Here they gain mechanical skills, knowledge, ability and experience in motor vehicles, and workshops range from novice to the more advanced mechanic.
In 2011 a small group of young peoplefrom the group wanted a project to challenge their mechanical skills, knowledge and creativity and so they entered Youth Bike - a nationally run competition which gives young people the opportunity to develop their existing skills and knowledge through engaging in a group task to restore a bike / trike to its former glory or design their own custom made bike / trike.
The group wanted to make a finished vehicle that stood out from the crowd and would have wider public appeal and after much discussion the general consensus was to base this project on the ‘Only fools and horses’ theme. The group have also thought of an interesting and creative twist but at present this remains top secret till nearer the event – so watch this space!
Members of the Youth Bike group have taken complete control of running the whole project. This has included design ideas and plans, producing a portfolio of their on-going work, budgeting and applying for funding bids, sponsorship and donations.
After distributing countless letters and making many phone calls the group the project has encountered many donations, including funding from the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards scheme.
