Download the report in fullThis Spring the Jack Petchey Foundation launched a survey to ask young people their thoughts and feelings about the future, about employment and education and about their ambitions. We were delighted that over 5,300 young people responded to this survey. They took the time to fill out the report, proving they have a voice and they want it to be heard. This report is a platform for their opinions.

On 13th July the government releases new figures on youth unemployment in the UK. The trend to date has caused serious concern, with current estimations showing 1 in 10 of all 16 - 24 year olds are unemployed. This is a dire situation - young people are facing the most challenging economic times in the UK for 30 years.

However our report shows that far from being passive victims our young people are working hard to give themselves the best possible chance of success. Over half of those who responded are currently taking, or planning to take a course to improve their skills. Almost half have committed to unpaid work experience and significant numbers are involved in volunteering.

Young people accept the tough situation before them and are willing and enthusiastic to go the extra mile to ensure they achieve a successful future.

The Jack Petchey Foundation is supporting young people in their efforts to develop themselves and improve their chances of entering their chosen career. The Foundation is calling on all key decision makers - be they politicians, policy makers, businesses - to join us and make a contribution to finding a solution to this disgraceful issue of youth unemployment.

Let us harness the energy and resourcefulness of our young people and give them the opportunities to find their own solutions. After all, our economic future is 100% in the hands of our younger generations!
