Arabella Campbell Tribute - Bromley Youth Support Programme

Bromley teenagers dedicate Duke of Edinburgh Award in memory of Arabella

Arabella Campbell will be remembered as a much loved, vivacious, kind and clever girl, at the heart of a close knit family. Earlier this year Arabella, who was a pupil at Langley School for Girls, tragically died of a sudden heart failure while studying for her GSCE exams, which she was due to take in the summer of 2013.

Before her tragic death, Arabella had been undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award with a group of six friends. Despite the shock of losing a friend and team member, the group were persistent in their efforts to complete the award in memory and celebration of Arabella.

The Award involved a 3-day hiking and camping expedition across the South Downs, which was completed in September. The group, who named themselves the Severn Sisters after the chalk cliffs in East Sussex where they did their practice hike, had to be entirely self-sufficient for the duration of the 48 mile trip.

They set up a JustGiving page to fundraise for the charity Cardio Risk in the Young, and have raised over £4,000 in a little over six months. The girls also took a video-camera with them to record their adventures for a video, which you can watch on the Bromley Youth Suppport Programme's Facebook page!

Elizabeth Atkinson, who took part in the expedition, said, “Arrie was so welcoming when I first met her, I’ve never met anyone as friendly and lovely as she was. I am lucky to have known such a sweet girl. She’ll be sorely missed.”

Arabella was posthumously awarded the Jack Petchey Achievement Award for October at Bromley Youth Support Programme, who coordinated the Duke of Edinburgh Award for the group.

As well as taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, Arabella enjoyed horse riding and tennis and had a great appetite for life.
