Drumming up dreams: Surbiton Royal British Legion Youth Marching Band perform at Disneyland Paris

The Jack Petchey Foundation has donated a £732 grant to renovate the Surbiton Royal British Legion Youth Marching Band’s drums, enabling them to perform at Disneyland Paris.

“Over the last few years our percussion section has grown from 4 to 10 people. The drum section is a very important part of the band but to enable all members to progress, we need to be able to provide them with drums that are the right size and playable.” says Denise Corbett, SRBLYMB’s Jack Petchey coordinator.

The Small Grants Fund offers up to £750 to any organisation running the Jack Petchey Achievement Award and Leader Award schemes.

“Having the drums refurbished has made a great difference to the Percussion section,” says Denise. The new drums were first used at SRBLYMB’s Christmas concert and for the first time in several years, the younger members performed a drum static (performance just by drummers). “The older members decided to take a step back and let the young members take the limelight,” says Denise proudly.

The drums were also used at the Paris New Year’s Day Parade and at Disneyland Paris. “All the band members were very excited about it, especially the drummers” says Denise. “It was their first band job with these new drums.”

The band is open to 8-25 year olds. In addition to learning how to play an instrument of their choice, members are taught drill and parade skills. SRBLYMB has performed at several high-profile events including the Lord Mayor’s Show, London New Year’s Day Parade and the Remembrance Day Parade.

“Groups like this are fantastic for young people that may not be able to afford music lessons or opportunities to travel. We’re very excited to see where they perform next!” says a spokesperson from the Jack Petchey Foundation.
