Mahatir Pasha - Ilford County High School

Aspiring presenter aims to keep the momentum going...

At only 17, aspiring broadcast journalist Syed Mahatir Pasha can already count hosting his own TV show, meeting the Bangladeshi Prime Minister and creating numerous video documentaries among his past endeavours. In the summer of 2013, Mahatir took part in the government’s National Citizen Service programme, The Challenge, an intense four-part programme for 16 and 17 year olds that comprises of physical and team challenges, and social action projects.

Mahatir’s dream is to become a political editor of a major news organisation although he knows that there is a long and arduous path ahead to reach this goal. “I am fortunate to have already had some great presenting and reporting experiences, and I aim to keep the momentum going so I can achieve success.”

Mahatir accredits taking part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge as a central part to his personal development and ability to present in a confident and coherent manner. Mahatir won the Redbridge regional finals of Speak Out in 2011, and counts it among his greatest achievements so far.

“The Speak Out Challenge was an absolutely unforgettable experience. It really improved my confidence and elocution, and taught me never give up on myself and to always have faith, because you never know what will happen until you try!”

In 2012, British-Bangladeshi Mahatir hosted an educational quiz show for teenagers called Clever Clogs, which ran for several months on Channel 9. Contestants battled it out against each other to answer questions that ranged from politics to sport to be crowned the ‘Clever Clogs’ for the day!

Mahatir also conducted news reports on Bangladeshi war crime trials in early 2013 and has made a number of documentaries including one titled Rich vs. Poor – Who is Damaging More?, examining the environmental damage inflicted by different social classes.
