Riddlesdown Collegiate - Environmental Awards

Croydon youngsters 'keen to go green'

In March 2014, more than 40 students from Riddlesdown Collegiate were presented with David Attenborough Awards for their work in protecting the environment.

The awards were presented to the students by Greenpeace Croydon activist Roisin Robertson, who has worked with the independent environmental organisation for over thirty years.

She said, It is encouraging for the future that these young people are prepared to put so much energy into discovering the importance of their actions in preserving peace and the environment.”

Before presenting the students with a certificate and badge to commemorate their efforts, Ms Robertson spoke about on-going Greenpeace campaigns Save the Artic, Ancient Rainforests and Hugh’s Big Fish Fight.

The David Attenborough initiative came about when Learning Support Assistant and keen environmentalist Hazel Dean received a Jack Petchey Leader Award for her commitment to the Collegiate. Hazel invested the £500 Small Grant in a scheme to reward students who show a positive attitude and behavior towards environmental issues. Mrs Dean hopes that this initiative will encourage others to recognise the importance of protecting and preserving the environment we live in.

Principal at the Collegiate Gordon Smith said, This group of students are outstanding ambassadors for Riddlesdown and have truly embraced the Collegiate ethos- ‘Learners of today. Leaders of tomorrow.’ Many of them give up their lunch break on a regular basis to work with local wardens on Riddlesdown Common, some are part of our thriving gardening club and our College VI students have taken part in Greenpeace marches. Congratulations to them all!”
