Harrow Cricket Coach Sadhna Patel was presented with the Jack Petchey Foundation Outstanding Leader Award for the dedication she has shown and the success she has achieved at Harrow St Mary’s Cricket Club.
In 2013 Team Manager Sadhna coached the club’s Under-15 side to the National Championship. The triumph made history as it was the first time a Middlesex Club had achieved such a feat since 1978.
Club Secretary Lesley Brown said, “Sadhna is incredibly well organised and passionate about cricket and St Mary’s Cricket Club. She possesses a range of different skills as well as coaching, and she has been highly influential in bringing success to the club.”
The majority of the Under-15 side had been with the club since the age of nine, and it was through Sadhna’s guidance that they achieved so much success, being crowned the best out of 1,700 sides across the country that competed in the competition.
Sadhna obtained her coaching qualifications several years ago and is one of only two female coaches in the club. Even though her sons are not members of St Mary’s anymore, year after year, Sadhna has continued to manage a squad. On top of coaching, she brings her knowledge of planning and development to the Management and Development Committees, and is responsible for brokering sponsorship deals at the club.
She said, “Development of our young cricketers is at the forefront of the club’s development strategy. I am chuffed to have won the Leader Award, and I look forward to working with the Under 11 side in the coming season.”
Although members of the Under-15 championship winning side would normally move up to the under-17s, Sadhna expects that come summer 2014, several of them will be representing the club at senior level.
For the 2014 season, Sadhna has gone a full circle as she returns to coaching the Under-11 side. The U11s play indoor matches in local sports halls to keep them involved in the game during the winter, before starting the Twenty20 format games in the summer.
