#CrystalAwards: Hackney Youth Club enjoy a weekend away jam-packed with activities.

On 2nd October 2015, the Jack Petchey Foundation held the Crystal Awards at City Hall, London to mark the 15th Anniversary of the Jack Petchey Foundation and the milestone of having invested £100m into youth projects in London and Essex. In a special gesture to mark the occasion, £225,000 of grant awards were given on the night to 150 youth groups specially selected for their outstanding work with young people.

Springfield Youth Club is a safe haven for young people to meet eachother and enjoy themselves. Access to the Youth Club enables local young people to develop social, team building, leadership, and communication skills for the future. Springfield Youth Club is located on Big Hill in Hackney, which enables the club to attract a diverse group of young people, often from disadvantaged backgrounds. Springfield Youth Club is dedicated “to help each child or young person find interests, and to help each individual to develop, as far as they can, towards being a useful citizen of tomorrow.”

Springfield Youth Club used their £1500 Crystal Awards grant to help fund a trip in December 2015 to Woodrow House, for a weekend filled with a wide range of activities for 36 of their club members. Woodrow house is a 17th century manor house set in the countryside of the Chiltern Hills. The young people took part in the Woodrow Superstars programme, in which they are divided into groups and compete for points which they win throughout the weekend by taking part in the various activities on offer. There was a wide range of activities available, from arts and crafts, to obstacle courses, sporting activities to orienteering. In each activity the young people were ranked a given a points score, which would contribute to their final scores. Thanks to the Crystal Award grant the trip was heavily subsidised, allowing children from more disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in the trip.

The weekend was a great chance for the young people to try new things, gain new skills and enjoy taking a trip outside of their area of London. Springfield Club received very positive feedback about the trip from the young people. Including: “It was really good fun, it gives you an opportunity to make friends with people you don’t really know.” “I really enjoyed it, because I have never done some of the stuff we did while we were at Woodrow.” “It was a fantastic weekend, my favourite part was doing the two mile marathon- epic!” Their families also really appreciated Springfield Youth Club taking their children for a fun activity weekender outside of London, which some families are unable to do themselves.
