Jack Petchey Foundation sponsors University Technical College in Rainham!

The Jack Petchey Foundation is supporting the development of a new University Technical College for 14 - 19 year olds in East London. Located in a state of the art building in Rainham, 'Elutec' is due to open in September 2014 and will specialise in engineering and design.

WIth smaller than average class sizes, a unique curriculum, and state of the art facililites and equipment, the college will create a route to top class jobs and higher education qualifications in the engineering and design sector.

The school will be non-selective and, working closely with employers, will focus on high academic achievements as well as technical and vocational skills. Scholastic input for the college will come from University College London and industrial partners including Ford and Network Rail.

Elutec held its first open day in July 2013, giving prospective students the chance to meet the newly appointed head teacher, Ruth Umerah, who joins from the JCB Academy in Staffordshire, the country’s first UTC.

She said, “I have seen how the UTC ethos can create confidence in young people and inspire them to discover a passion for learning.  Elutec will deliver a much needed focus on engineering and design within East London and Essex and I am honoured to be selected as the first Principal.”
