Heybridge proud of lifesaver Luke!

21 year old Luke Songer was awarded an Achievement Award after he saved a man’s life when cycling home for lunch. Luke, who is trained in first aid, put his life-saving skills to the test when he came across 65 year old Ron Collins collapsed underneath a car in Holloway Road, Heybridge.

The electrical mechanical apprentice, who is training at the Youngman Group in The Causeway, had thought Mr Collins was working on his car’s engine, but he turned his bike around to double check.

Finding Mr Collins had no pulse, quick thinking Luke flagged down a passing driver who called 999 while he began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. An ambulance soon arrived and thankfully Mr Collins made a full recovery. The two have since been reunited, with Mr Collins ‘eternally grateful’ to Luke for his alertness and concern for other people.

A keen footballer, Luke is a member of Maldon and Tiptree Football Club and on top of playing, he also coaches and referees games in the youth section. He used the £200 Achievement Award money to take his teammates to a professional football match at Colchester United. As if that wasn’t enough, Luke also supports his mum with social events at his local church.

Grants Officer for Essex, Nikki Casey said, “Luke’s actions are incalculable - it is obvious that he is a very attentive and considerate young man and he is fully deserving of his award”
