Makeda Jobson - Reachin' Higher, Croydon

Makeda is an inspiration for Croydon youth!

Youth worker Makeda Jobson won a Jack Petchey Foundation Leader Award for the outstanding contributions she has made to the Croydon youth organisation, Reachin’ Higher. Over the last 5 years Makeda has worked tirelessly as a mentor for numerous young people to guide them towards a positive and successful future.

Reenee Jackson, who attends Reachin’ Higher said, Makeda is an amazing leader! She is focused, confident and organised and someone you can always rely on for advice and words of wisdom. Makeda is definitely a role model for me; she is dedicated and she believes in what she does. She wants to help enforce a positive change for young people in community. Her faith in me has enabled me to be more confident in what I do and to help others.”

Makeda has a passion and an enthusiasm for volunteering, and has helped to organise a range of events and programmes at Reachin’ Higher including a summer scheme this year for over a hundred young people in Croydon called Summer Blitz. The four week programme, supported by Croydon Council and Children in Need, included a variety of day trips, creative workshops and sporting events for 12-16 year olds, while there were also volunteering opportunities for 17 and 18 year olds.

16 year old Khalifa Jones emphasised Makeda’s determination to help others, and the influence she had on her own personal development. Makeda doesn't allow you to give up. She is patient and funny and she's shown me as a young female to respect myself. She has also taught me the importance of being a good role model and setting a good example to others.”

Reachin’ Higher was set up to provide a creative outlet for young people and the organisation have since grown to a team of over 40 experienced and enthusiastic youth workers. As well as running PSHE sessions, residential youth camps and musical productions, Reachin’ Higher recently set up a football academy and is working closely with local schools, police and councils to reach out to and work with even more young people.
