Michael decides where the money goes

Seventeen year old CONEL student, Michael Davis, is this year’s winner of the Jack Petchey Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. Vice Principal, Vice Principal Cathy Walsh presented Michael with a certificate and a £300 cheque from the Foundation. But the money is not for him! Michael can now decide how his efforts can help the college. Sports staff gave Michael a list of the resources needed and he had to decide what they can spend the money on.

Michael is currently on the BTEC First in Public Services course and is then aiming to complete the next two years of his BTEC National as well. He should have no problems in achieving his personal goals because his current track record at CONEL is immaculate: “Michael has already passed his course with distinction and has a 100 per cent attendance record,” says the programme manager, Chris Barry.

“I was so proud when I was told that I would receive the award, I have worked really hard at it. I’m determined to complete my BTEC Nationals because I would like to go into the Police Service or Armed Forces if I do well,” Michael says.

Michael’s proud mum had this to say: “Michael has always been a good student and he works so hard at his course. He has realy advanced study skills, he has a large calendar on his wall on which he meticulously plans his course work and study times. I think the support he received from his teachers at College made all the difference and has helped to make him the success he is today.”

The Jack Petchey Foundation gives grants to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11 to 25. The Foundation was set up to help young people take advantage of opportunities and play a full part in society.
