Paralympic World Cup Gold medallist wins award for dedication to young people

Richard Chiassaro, Paralympic World Cup Gold medallist has won the Jack Petchey Leader Award for his commitment to members of All Ability Sports and Leisure in Epping, Essex.

This follows a long list of achievements, including being an Essex Inspired Athlete and Paralympic World Cup Gold Medallist 2012. Richard is ranked Number 1 in the UK for T54 100m and 200m wheelchair racing.

Helen Offord, All Ability Sports and Leisure’s Jack Petchey coordinator says “Richard has been a fantastic role model for all our members. He has given so much commitment to helping improve skill level for wheelchair racing and for wheelchair basketball. He has trained so hard.”

Richard started his sporting career with basketball. “I wanted to do something but, being in a wheelchair; football was out the question - apart from when I used to play in goal with my friends. I started basketball and then decided to try racing and loved it. I also love coaching, it changed my life.”

All Ability Sports and Leisure aims to inspire people with disabilities to take up active lifestyles, create a more inclusive sporting community while contributing towards a healthier community in general.

Richard says winning the Leader Award “means a lot”. Ultimately All Ability Sports members make it all worthwhile. “I love seeing the young people that I coach improving and having fun. I consider myself their friend, not just their coach.”
