Scott Guichard - Middle Park Community Centre

How youth worker Scott turned it around..

When Scott Guichard was offered a volunteer placement at Middle Park Community Centre at the advice of his teacher at Eltham Green School, it marked a turning point in his life.

Scott’s commitment and behaviour at Eltham Green had been below par yet the opportunity sparked a change in both his attitude and his approach towards other people. In his first year at the centre, Scott won a Jack Petchey Achievement Award for his outstanding work during a sports programme for young people. The recognition gave him the boost he needed.

“It was really the turning point for me and I began thinking about how I could give something back. Middle Park saw my potential and they were offering me a chance, which motivated me further.”

Scott, from Hornpark Estate, is now a qualified Youth Worker and takes charge of breakfast and after-school clubs at the Middle Park Centre. He is involved in running school holiday programmes and coordinates residential trips for young people from the local area. He also runs sports sessions in local primary schools and a positive lunchtime club at Eltham Green (now Harris Academy Greenwich).

“I know that I will always be involved in this type of work, I work very well with children and young people and I have built strong relationships with parents and other professionals.”

Jack Petchey Foundation Grants Officer for South London Jane Evans said, “Scott is incredibly motivated to help others. His turnaround is an inspiring story and that’s something that he should be very proud of!”
