Dedicated youth football supporter Sharon Lee won an outstanding Leader Award for encouraging and enabling players to access a youth leadership programme in Bromley.
Sharon is the driving force behind the ‘Football Futures’ programme at Petts Wood FC, organising induction sessions and inspiring players to become the next generation of a skilled football workforce.
The club’s Treasurer Meryl Clarke said, “Sharon plays an integral role in developing our young footballers as they grow through adolescence. She has enabled them to hone their skills and become role models for younger players. The Football Futures programme is relatively new, but we are making great progress in Bromley through Sharon’s dedication.”
Football Futures offers a range of opportunities for young people (aged 14-24) beyond simply playing the game. Whether it’s coaching on the touchlines, refereeing, training as a physio or behinds the scenes work such as marketing or organising tournaments, Football Futures has something for all young people interested in the sport.
As well as awarding FA qualifications, the programme rewards volunteers for their services through coaching bursaries, kit, vouchers, match tickets and the opportunity to attend national and international events.
Volunteers can also apply to become a part of a Young Leaders Council which gives young people a voice in the future development and direction of football in the country.
Sharon, of Gravel Road in Bromley, plays a key role in developing community engagement at Petts Wood FC, and is the club’s Welfare Officer, Clubhouse Manager and Admin Secretary.
Jane Evans, Jack Petchey Foundation Grants Officer for South London said, “Sharon goes above and beyond her role at Petts Wood to offer opportunities for young people beyond playing sport. The Football Futures programme is a tremendous way for young people to develop transferable skills and work alongside their passion simultaneously.”
