THE PETCHEY ACADEMY MOVES INTO BRAND NEW BUILDING
Jack Petchey OBE went back to school when he visited the brand new building in Shacklewell Lane Hackney, now home to the Petchey Academy.
Jack Petchey, East End entrepreneur, attended an assembly and was keen to repay a wager of £1 made with the construction company Norwest Holst earlier this year. Jack challenged the Building Project Manager, Chris Thwaites, to ensure that this new Academy would be completed and handed over on time.
The Petchey Academy stands out in many ways. Architecturally it is a superb and an innovative building which has been delivered ‘ on budget and on time’
It opened its doors to 380 year 7 and 8 students on the 10th September 2007 and when the school is full, there will be 1,200 students including 300 in the 6th Form.
The Academy has many special facilities that will broaden opportunities for young people including ~ a training restaurant, a dance studio, excellent music provision and well equipped sports hall.
The specialism of the Petchey Academy is ‘Health, Care & Medical Sciences’, and this theme runs through the Academy. Every student is in a ‘house’ and these are named after prominent people in the health, care and medical science field. The two wings of the Academy are named after famous London hospitals, Barts and Kings.
There is still external work to be completed as the temporary accommodation has to be removed and new multi-use games area (MUGA) built. There will be a formal opening of the Academy in early 2008.
The Academy has been sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation. This Foundation is the vision of Jack Petchey OBE a prominent East London entrepreneur. Founder Jack Petchey said: “This is a magnificent building and we hope that it will enable young people to achieve great things”.

David Daniels, Principal of the Academy, said “We have already had a successful first year in the temporary accommodation, this spacious, bright and inspirational building will be welcomed by students and staff and enable us to go from strength to strength”.
