Jack Petchey’s Count on Us Secondary Maths Challenge

Through our partnership with The Maths Zone, we are on a mission to make maths fun!

The programme provides resources, support materials and in-person training sessions to help teachers engage year 7-9 students with exciting maths games designed to challenge, inspire and motivate. Count on Us makes maths fun and boosts students’ confidence around learning.

The resources are designed for use in classrooms and maths clubs, with students honing skills via in-school tournaments. Teams of five pupils then represent their school in the Count on Us tournaments, including regional Heats and the Grand Final at a prestigious venue.

  • Suitable for: Year 7, 8 and 9
  • Theme: STEM
  • Cost to School: £250 for new schools or £100 for schools that competed in last year’s COU Challenge Heats/Final
  • Duration: Half day teacher training, flexible delivery time and optional participation in Heats and Final.
  • Curriculum / Enrichment: Both, during maths lessons or maths clubs.

When he joined the Navy, Sir Jack was taught many new skills in maths and geometry. He found that problem solving was an engaging way for him to learn.

In 2016, the Count on Us Secondary Maths Challenge was launched in partnership with the Mayor’s Fund for London. The programme is now being led and delivered by The Maths Zone.
