Achievement Award winner uses £250 Grant towards a honey bee extractor | Jack Petchey Foundation

After being awarded a Jack Petchey Achievement Award, Greig City Academy student  Sessil spent her £250 Achievement Award Grant on something a little unusual – a honey bee extractor! 🐝 🍯

Sessil joined the Beehive Club, created by her English Teacher, Mr Bird, and Design Technology Teacher, Mr Hilmi. The club began with a simple idea that blossomed in discussion during an English lesson, and went on to create a club solely around bees! As Sessil was passionate about nature, she immediately signed up for the club. Sessil and her club-mates welcomed the bees by clearing a space for the hives and planting over 2000 flower seeds.  The club’s members wear bee suits when handling and feeding them up front whilst constructing a soothing atmosphere for them, leading to being beeerilliant beekeepers!

The Honey Extrator is a great addition to the school and makes collecting honey an easier process, allowing the students to return the honeycombs back to the bees, ready for them to produce more honey. It also means that Sessil’s school is able to produce and distribute pure honey amongst students that may not have access to it otherwise!

Furthermore, this kind of equipment helps further interest students around Sessil’s school, and has created more sign-up to the Beehive Club. Sessil commented “It’s made such a difference to the club and makes collecting honey much easier for students!”

Sessil was awarded the Achievement Award for having a mature and enthusiastic drive in all her studies. She has a confident attitude in the way she approaches projects and extra-curriculums as well as being an ambassador for the school. Upon receiving her award, Sessil said “The Jack Petchey Award gave me a sense of pride and joy considering this isn’t an easy reward to win, encouraging me to continue and do more because what goes around comes around!”

Lucky that a school gets to consume pure honey from bees that gives their swarm wishes!
